Estate Planning for the Business Owner - Word on the Street
Thursday, October 17, 2019, 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM, ET
Presenter: Neel Shah, JD

WHAT WE’LL COVER

It is said that an entrepreneur is one who chooses to work 15 hours a day for themselves so they don't have to work eight hours a day for someone else. However, of those 15 hours a day, typically less than one hour is devoted to something other than making money.

Business owners are accustomed to working with attorneys, but primarily in a reactive role (for litigation or transactional needs.)  Many of them know they ‘should’ be doing something to proactively plan their estates, but are often at a loss as to how to get started. Many fall into the trap of relying on attorneys or other professionals not educated on how to address their needs effectively. Estate planning attorneys not educated on the nuances of representing the business owner can fail to grasp the flexibility needed by the entrepreneur. It is also important to understand the mindset of the business owner with respect to their planning goals.

Join us as WealthCounsel member Neel Shah presents Planning for the Business Owner.  Topics to be covered include:

  • Marketing to business owners and understanding the mindset of the prospective entrepreneur client,
  • Identifying common goals of business owners, including succession planning, asset protection planning and legacy protection,
  • Common traps associated with planning, including tax traps, partnership issues, and
  • Trust and estate planning strategies used in practice to accomplish multiple goals at once, including revocable living trusts, intentionally defective grantor trusts, and incomplete non-grantor trusts.
