Attorney Joel Weissler has practiced law in California for over 30 years. He was brought into estate, asset protection and tax planning through experiencing the devastating impact that poor planning can have on a family and into elder law through experiences dealing with family members who have needed care because of congenital disabling conditions, Dementia, Alzheimer’s, and COPD. As life moved along he gained personal experience in negotiating IEPs.
Practicing in Southern California, Joel has served thousands of clients and helped them maintain control of their own affairs, financially parent their children, hold on to their assets, pay less tax and cost efficiently get the care they need when they are old. He has been recognized for the past ten years by Martindale-Hubble and its affiliated website Lawyers.com with their “Client Distinction” award as being in the top 1% of attorneys in client service and satisfaction. In addition, Attorney Weissler has received a Superb rating each year by Avvo for more than ten years. He is a California Board of Legal Specialization Certified Tax Specialist.
Attorney Weissler has served as a co-author and contributing editor of the University of California CEB Press’s highly regarded California Estate Planning Practice Guide each year since 2019 and their Business Succession Planning Guide since 2010, authoring chapters on dealing with Medi-Cal planning, estate, and tax planning issues. Since 2023 he has also served as update author for their chapters covering asset protection. Attorney Weissler is the author of the book “The California Guide to Growing Old Without Going Broke” released as an e-book and paperback through Amazon where it gained best seller recognition during its first three days after it was released. He hopes to update the guide before the end of 2025. Joel has been a featured speaker for attorney continuing education firms within and outside of California on estate planning, elder law, and special needs issues.
He received his JD from California Western School of Law in 1989 after completing the traditional three you program in two years. He was awarded an LLM in taxation (cum laude) from the University of San Diego in 1995. Attorney Weissler is an active member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) and past president of its southern California chapter. In addition, he is a member of WealthCounsel, and was a charter member of Elder Counsel. Through peer nomination attorney Weissler was recognized in 2010 as a "Top Attorney" in the Estate Planning Category by the San Diego Daily Transcript.
Attorney Weissler has appeared as a guest expert on radio, TV, and Video Podcasts. He is Vice President of the San Diego County Council on Aging and a member of the San Diego Estate Planning Council. Joel lives in San Diego along with his wife, a physician, three children, one dog and one bird.
