Irrevocable life insurance trusts (ILITs, pronounced “eye-lits”) are a powerful tool; when properly deployed, they can be extremely effective, but if misused or poorly designed, they can be disastrous for clients and beneficiaries alike. This presentation will cover ILITs from A to Z, beginning with basic information about life insurance and progressing to an in-depth discussion of taxation, Crummey powers, generation-skipping transfer taxes, and the reciprocal trust doctrine. Included is a step-by-step analysis of the ILIT order of operations.
