Crafting a Memorandum of Intent for Effective Special Needs Planning

Wednesday, May 21, 2025, 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM, Eastern Time

Presenter: Michele P. Fuller

The Memorandum of Intent (MOI) is a critical yet often-overlooked component of special needs planning. While not a legally binding document, it serves as a roadmap for future caregivers, trustees, and advocates, ensuring that the unique needs, preferences, and aspirations of a person with disabilities are understood and honored. This session will teach attorneys how to effectively explain the purpose and significance of an MOI to their clients, draft a comprehensive and valuable document, and integrate it into the overall special needs plan. The discussion will cover best practices for capturing key details about the beneficiary’s medical history, daily routines, financial considerations, social preferences, and strategies for updating and maintaining the MOI over time.
