Melvin A. Warshaw has 40 years of experience as an estate planning and tax lawyer and currently serves as a legal advisor to wealthy international individuals and families who have U. S. connections. Mr. Warshaw’s current focus as an international tax and estate planning lawyer is primarily in the area of international inbound planning for Non-Resident Aliens and Resident Aliens of the U.S. and outbound planning for U.S. persons who own foreign property and businesses.
Mr. Warshaw’s legal career has included a variety of roles in the field of sophisticated wealth transfer and estate planning. He is a past partner of McDermott Will & Emery’s Private Client Dept., having established the Boston office practice. He also served as a senior wealth advisor in JP Morgan Private Bank’s Boston and Greenwich offices. Most recently, he served as general counsel to a large national brokerage that focused on delivering liquidity planning strategies through the use of an array of life insurance products. Mr. Warshaw began his legal career in the Office of the General Counsel at the Internal Revenue Service National Office in Washington, D.C.
He is currently a member of the international section of the editorial board of Trusts and Estates magazine and has been a frequent contributor over the last decade. In 2018, he published a two-part article in Trusts and Estates that focused on the planning implications of the recent repeal of the 30-day CFC rule and possible entity structure solutions as well as consideration of offshore PPLI. In 2019, he published an article focused on American citizens who move permanently to Israel. He has begun work on a new article focused on wealthy Hong Kong families who make investments into, or have children who live in, the U.S. Mr. Warshaw has been nominated to the prestigious Academy of International Estate and Trust Lawyers.
Mr. Warshaw has been a Full member (TEP) of the Society of Trust and Estate Professionals (STEP) since 2006. He earned a STEP Advanced Certificate in Cross-Border Estates in 2017. He is currently a member of the STEP Special Interest Groups on Private International Clients and Cross-Border Estates. He will be a speaker at the STEP Wyoming 2019 conference where he will speak on China – U.S. Cross Border Planning for Chinese Nationals with U.S. Connections.
He is also a member of the American Bar Association Real Property and Probate Section, International Committee of the Income and Transfer Tax Planning Group. He is currently a Fellow of the Massachusetts Bar Foundation.
